My SQL not available with Roundcube Mail

I am trying to set up an Ubuntu mail server with Roundcube. I have MySQL set up and I am pretty sure I did everything right BUT Roundcube says the following when trying to install

Your issue isn't that the MySQL server isn't installed, but that you don't have the PHP extension for MySQL installed.

As per @brwainer 's suggestion i installed the

php extension for mysql with this command 

sudo apt-get install php-mysql
