What is disk write?

Hello,

I was wondering what component effects the disk read and write speed?

My disk is always on 100% all the time and I just wanted to know what that means and if I can do something about it.

Get an SSD. Spinning HDDs get to 100% regularly, because they can't read/write data as fast.

Your windows install? Or just your files? For just files, you drag and drop them wherever you want on your SSD.

my windows install and files, I don't know how to move them over.

Move your files to an external drive as a backup, then do a fresh install of Windows on the SSD, set it up, and move all your files back.

Disk write/read is affected mostly by programs running in background.
Antivirus check, Windows Update, STEAM or other program downloading/installing updates. They all need disk to move data around (A LOT). It gets easier on SSD since they don't have mechanical parts that slow down read/write speeds.

Startup applications are the biggest culprit of high disk usage. Disallow Chrome running in the background, disable unneeded startup applications in Task Manager and you should see a small improvement. Lower amounts of RAM can also cause disk swapping, between your RAM and drive, leading to lower performance.

If you buy a Samsung SSD, they include software called Samsung Magician that walks you through the process of cloning your existing HDD to the SSD, then you just have to change your boot settings in UEFI/BIOS to reflect this change. It is the kind of thing that seems complicated at first, but is pretty simple once you've done it a few times.
Other SSD manufacturers sometimes include software for cloning, but not all. Crucial does, Western Digital Blue SSDs don't include any software.

You can use the Windows 10 Media Creation tool to create a bootable Windows 10 USB, if you plan on doing a fresh install of your operating system onto the new drive.
