Hey Guys,

I have a bit of an interesting situation, my room where my PC is does not have an Ethernet port in the wall. When I built my PC I bought a WiFi card but being an online gamer that was not enough, so I bought an Ethernet cable and I run that through my house. However, as of yesterday it simply stopped working. When I try to see what the issue is my PC tells me that nothing is plugged in, when the cable is clearly plugged in on both sides. I have tried disabling the WiFi card and resetting my network settings but nothing seems to work. Is it possible that my cable broke? It is only about a year old so I find it kind of unlikely.

Thanks in advance,

D34thL0cK.

Disconnect the cable physically and plug it back in, also look at the jack to see if the link lights come on. Try plugging the other end into a different port on the router. Turn off the router and turn it back on again (may need to pull the power plug if it doesn't have an on/off switch).

For many years I've been using ethernet cables. Once it worked, they never got suddenly "broken". I did however once (or twice) have a broken cable.

You said you ran your cable trough your house. This makes me wonder if you put said cable inside walls, or just in the open. If it's in the open, the most likely cause would have been a broken cable. And unless you've got equipment/second device, it's a bit difficult to check. (you could try to power up a small LED with the ethernet cable connected to the LED and a power source, ofcourse not connected to your pc and/or modem)

Best way to test is getting a different device connected OR getting a replacement (small) cable. If the cable is the source, you need to replace it. Otherwise you should just be able to return said new cable.

I have tried all of these, none of them help. The link lights do not turn on.

If you have another Ethernet cable (even if shorter), grab the router and bring it to your room to plug in and see if the Ethernet port on the computer went bad. If the port works with another cable then put the router back and order a new, long, cable.

I will try this once there isn't anyone using it later. Thanks for the help!
