Currently have a 4690k overclocked to 4.3 ghz, I'm thinking about upgrading to Ryzen within the next few weeks/month. Is the upgrade worth it? Or is this i5 still good enough for the games that are around now. I have a budget of around £300, maybe £400. I have a 1070 which is also overclocked and I feel the i5 does hold it back, I have had it for nearly two years now and is the only thing that hasn't been upgraded since building my PC.

Thanks :)

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I honestly don't think a CPU upgrade would be worthwhile for you atm

I would say you could stick to 4690k OC'd for a bit longer.  You may lose some performance on CSGO with Ryzen.

It's fine in everything but BF1, lots of stuttering and lost frames. But that game is a CPU hog which pins it at 100%.

Maybe another year? It runs pretty good at overclocked speed. At stock it is awful.

I would wait a bit if you can. A Ryzen has about the same IPC as 4th gen intel chips, so you'll only see an improvement if you can use more cores. Maybe coffeelake or a Ryzen refresh will be a more compelling upgrade.

Yeah, it would be a trade-off to some extent.  If high frame rates in CSGO isn't a big deal you may be happier.

Personally I would see about getting an i7 for your board if that's cheaper.

I think I'm just going to wait for a while, save up some money, and go 'all out' on anything new that comes out within the next year/year 1/2.

Yeah I don't think it's worth upgrading ATM. Right now the only thing I would suggest as an upgrade would be a 4790k. Or you could wait until next year for covfefe lake and/or zen2
