hi everyone...

i recently build a new system for myself and my motherboard is asus rampage v edition 10 and my main pc drive is samsung M.2 960 pro 512...

i tested my external hard drives write speed (both WD my passport  and silicon power A80) on motherboards USB3.0 connectors and it was around 70 MB/s...

then to increase the speed i changed the drive policy from quick removal to performance (due to the guides in internet)...

after doing so the transfer write speed increased to around 200 MB/s ,,, but the problem is that this 200 speed is only for a few seconds at the beginning of transfer process and after a few seconds the speed drops to around 70 again...

can anyone help me with the problem? how can i fix this issue?

thanks,,,

I have the same issue, I think the poor performance is due to 2 reasons:

1) The faster the read/write speed the more heat is generated in the drive and its controller, since there is no way of dissipating this heat, the read/write speed throttles. (This is what happens to all USB drives.)

2) The physical drive used for data storage in the WD my passports is not as fast as standalone hard drives. It has a custom controller designed for USB, rather than a SATA HDD and USB-SATA bridge.

I recently bought a pair of USB-SATA HDD enclosures and 2TB 2.5" seagate drives for someone at work, and they absolutely smoked the WD my passport drive. After that experience, I am never buying a USB HDD ever again.

If you want the ultimate experience, look for a mSATA/M.2 to USB enclosure. I bought one so I could use an old SSD I had from upgrading my laptop and it crushes every other external storage device I have ever owned in terms of speed.

Sync RGB fans with motherboard RGB header.

thanks for the reply,,,so it's a common problem then,,, i thought the speed drop during transfer is unusual...

yeah,,,your solution totally makes sense,,,i'm gonna try one of these enclosures ,,,, since i have so much file transferring, it can save me some time....
