i partly disassembled a broken thinkpad T410 and found out it has the CPU on a socket. (it is a core i5-520M)

@AshleyAshes recently made a thread about how he recycled a laptop by putting it's CPU and other components on a desktop board wich i found very interesting.

i kind of want to do the same now but there is one thing that confuses me:  according to ark.intel.com the 520M CPU is either BGA1288 or PGA988 but the socket i found in my thinkpad clearly reads rPGA989.

doing some more research, the only CPUs i found for socket 989 are 2nd gen (sandy bridge) but the 520m is 1st gen (arrandale)

what does that mean ? wich socket and board do i need ?

A couple of things that might help you out:

LGA are desktop sockets.

BGA are laptop sockets where the CPU is soldered to the board.

PGA are laptop sockets where the CPU may be able to be removed.

You're correct, the socket is called 'rPGA989' is SUPER similar to rPGA988.  It's possible that the mobo uses some parts that are newer.  Like, I thinkt he ONLY difference is the pin count between the two.  Both are sometimes called Socket G1 and Socket G2.  While they arn't interchangeable CPU wise, their chip dimensions and heights are.  In enterprise and industrial boards using either, the coolers are interchangeable.

My guess would be the laptop was newer and it uses a Socket G2 retention bracket on a SocketG1 socket.

so i need a socket 988 (G1) board for this CPU regardless of whats written on the socket of the thinkpad, right?

edit: this is the board i plan to buy http://www.ebay.de/itm/311714936230?_trksid=p2380057.m570.l5999&_trkparms=gh1g%3DI311714936230.N36.S1.R1.TR1

If you're certian that CPU is an i5-520M then yeah, it's def Socket G1.  You can of course count the pins to be extra sure.  Socket G1 CPU should be missing, I think, 2 pins in one corner.  Where as G2 is missing only one pin.
