My budget can handle one or the other, the price is basically the same for each

If it's for gaming, you should go with the R5 and 16GB of RAM, as the FPS difference in games is not much, compared to the R7. The R7 benefits of more cores, which is great for content creation.

Still, in my opinion, that R5 should be paired with a better GPU. Are you still going with 16GB of RAM?

You should go with 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1060 3GB, that's about the same price as a 1050Ti and 16GB. Even if you're upgrading the GPU down the road, you would sell the "old" GPU, am I right? But if you go with 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1060, you would only need to buy another 8GB of RAM, no need to waste time selling anything, not to mention depreciation.

What do you mean by backup? For a different build, or like, if the upgrade you get stops working, you go back to the 1050Ti?

Yeah a temporary failsafe for me or any of my mates really and i like the idea of having extra pc parts lying around

Your money, your choice  But let me tell you, you'd be better off with 8GB and a GTX 1060 rather than 16GB and a GTX 1050Ti.
