So it occurred to me today that I pay my isp, vyve broadband, $12 per month for my modem. I contacted them and they said I just need to be sure that the modem I buy has docsis3.0. So, can I go to amazon and just pick up a modem such as the netgear cm700, set it up, and go about my business as usual or am I oversimplifying this? I pay for 50Mbps so is buying a modem that has max download speeds of 1.4Gpbs complete overkill or is there a future-proofing reason to buy such a device?

If they say any Docsis 3.0 modem then yes. While the modem is capable of Gigabit speeds, its more on if the ISP will provision it that high. If your area is being upgraded to Gigabit speeds then its most likely Docsis 3.1.  Its hard to say if your ISP is going to upgrade to this standard. I was Suggested the CM600, Ive also heard good things about the Arris 6183 if you want something a little cheaper. Just stay away from any modem that has the Intel Puma 6 Chip in it. Those modems are all garbage.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
