I need to remotely login to someone's PC to help but don't want to have my computer open to the world like hamachi. Is team viewer good?

Teamviewer if you don't care about the the remote connection looking like crap, splashtop if you want near-native resolution (assuming you have the bandwidth of course), though splashtop does cost money for WAN connections (though you can circumvent that with some router configuration).

it's not RDP, it's another protocol, quite similar to teamviewer without teamviewer's security flaws. 

you sign in to your MS account, generate a code, and then give the code to the other side, they connect. 

 

much better than guiding someone over the phone to get teamviewer and then having a laggy experience anyway.
