i7 7700k or ryzen 1800x

I'm making a new build, and I'm stuck picking for my CPU. I'm on a  bit of a budget, and waiting for the new generation to land is not really an option, plus i couldn't afford to buy them at launch anyway. Now this will be primarily a gaming PC. So I'm curious: which one of them will pan out better in the long term. The 7700k seems from what I've seen to perform overall better and it is cheaper at least in my country, but the 1800x doesn't seem to drop performance that much, it outperforms the 7700k in some games I play a lot, and it's a lot better for multi-tasking of which I tend to do quite a bit of even while gaming. If anyone is curious or if it's relevant I could post the rest of the part list.

Ryzen is the way to go. The 7700k is a little older, and it have less cores.

Don’t get 1800x, get a 1700 or 1700x. Much cheaper and you can fairly easily overclock them to match an 1800x. If you multitask, especially while gaming, the 1700 and 1700x are the better choices.

gaming only, 7700k is slightly better than a 1700 (can overclock to 1800x and faster speeds) in 1080p high refreshrate.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

for 1080p gaming the 7700k is a lot better but what person with an i7 plays at 1080p? for anything higher like 1440p they are similar. The  1700 will age better too

The price difference is not relevant enough to bother between the 1700 and 1800x (not as much as the one between the 7700k and the 1800k which is noticeable enough) and honestly and I don't plan to mess around with overclocking, at least not from the start, maybe down the line as it grows older.

Don't forget that ryzen will be a better choice for gaming in the future, 4c/8t won't cut it forever.

Interesting. Where I live the difference is ~$200. If the difference really is negligible (which I don’t understand why), then go 1800x. Otherwise go 1700x.

The higher the res the less CPU needed generally.

I've got 240hz to push.

Nah, that doesnt require a lot. But trying to push demanding games as fast as possible requires a ton.
