When I boot up my computer it goes on to the log in screen but when I have entered my password it takes longer to load then once it has loaded there is just a black screen with my cursor. If I press Ctrl alt del it brings up the window but nothing works. Someone please help me.

Have you downloaded something iffy lately? Try in safe mode, I believe you hold down F8 to see those options.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Have you tried reinstalling the operating system? First, you go into settings, then click update and security, then click recovery and then you will see an icon that says get started, click on that and then follow through the steps. When you are in the process of reinstalling the operating system, make sure to select 'keep my files' or just backup all of your data beforehand.

I recently had the same problem where it would boot onto the desktop but display a black screen as well. For me, this only happened rarely. I was also experiencing slow downs of my computer because there were other apps running in the background hogging up my cpu usage, so I reinstalled the operating system and success, everything was back to normal.

How do I boot into safe mode?

On windows 7 you would hold down F8 until you saw the options.

You would install from a USB from outside the OS
