The best collection database software specifically for Transformers collecting is a Java app but I know Java is a huge security risk. So with current virtualisation and container tech how should I go about installing Java and the Java app I need in a safe manner?

I spend too much on my PC. Then I spend even more on my Sim Rig. Damn, this stuff's expensive.

Are you talking about java in the web browser or the java runtime?

Nothing wrong with installing the JRE.

If you are paranoid about java applets in the browser then get a different browser from your default just for this.

What ever you install get it direct from oracle.

Indeed, and as an addition to this, these 'security concerns' arose from older, deprecated version being used. As long as one keeps it updated then there's very little to be concerned about.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
