How do i get an XLR mic working?

Mattco

My friend gave me a mic (MXL Mix UA-1) I've never heard of and can really find anything about it but i want to know how to set it up normally, because i know that its not just get female xlr to usb then go.

Thanks for helping me

And if you find anything about the mic please tell me.

You need something called a audio interface.

kind of a Badass soundcard :D

i googled your mic... it is a condenser microphone. For it to work you will need „Phantome power“ this is power for the microphone wich your Audio interface or pre amp delivers to the mic to function correctly. Otherwise the output of the mic would be so low (or not even there) you could not record it properly.

so what you need is a Audio interface with Phantome power.

Those Devices have a microphone pre amp (amplifies the sigal from the mic)

then a DAC ( converts the analog signal from you mic to a digital one)

wich then gets to the soundcard in this device wich delivers it via USB to your pc.

now the question for you. What is your use case for this mic? Do you wanna record music

or just use it for Skype team speak etc?

then I can recommend you a fitting Audio Interface :)

Uh, well, just as a side note for about 100 you can get a decent audio interface like the Scarlett 2i2. Sure its twice as expensive, but then at least you have the option for taking your mic use to the next level. It may be overkill in your case though.
