JK, for purely gaming the 7700(k). It is the gaming CPU!

Ah, but this isn't the K variant.  Meaning OP is looking at a 4.0ghz 7700.  An r7 1700 at 3.9ghz will be basically within margin of error in sheer gaming but with a longer lifespan and better performance over time as more cores are used

Hey, guys just wanted your opinion on which CPU I should use. A friend of mine is looking to upgrade his system so it can run games using the HTC Vive, and he got me to help him build it. The budget for the upgrade is $800 AUD (He already has an r9 390x). He isn't going to do any production or editing but he wants to maximize gaming performance. What CPU and other upgrades do you guys recommend? Note that I also want to make sure the CPU will last a few years for VR and general gaming. (Originally, I was thinking of using an i7 7700 or overclock a Ryzen 1700). Also, i have already found out the prices for the intel and AMD side and in Australia, it's roughly the same.

Thanks a lot, guys :) (first ever forum post yay)

A Ryzen 5 1600 is sufficient for Vive, imo.

This is my Orange Room bench with a stock clock RX 480 8G: http://www.3dmark.com/vrpor/129883

VR is mostly GPU-bound, but it still requires a decent CPU
