Buying a PC

How long will it be before you upgrade the cpu?  If the answer is 3 months or so get the older i5 setup, any longer than that and I recommend the g4560.

Actually, go with the pentium either way.  Enthusiasts will be dropping kaby chips like mad to upgrade to 8th gen so you should be able to snag either a brand new 8700/k or second hand 6700/k or 7700/k super cheap.

Hi Everyone,

I need opinions on what to get and why.
Option 1:
i5 4460
Gigabyte H81m
2x4gb G.Skills Ripjaws

Option 2:
Pentium G4560
Asrock H110m
1x8gb Avexir Red Led

Both are being offered at almost the same price ~$12 difference

Initially planning on getting the i5 for more cores / overall performance but thinking about getting the 2nd option for future upgrades.

Thanks in advance!

the first option will be better, you can still upgrade the ram to 16gb in the future and to an i7/xeon if you needed the performance.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

where do u live and what is your budget

I live in PH and what's given is all-in-all my budget.

My old parts had "given up" i7 3770, mboard and Ram all died because of extreme unpredictable conditions (stupid cats).
And I just... this are the immediate options that I have

I guess so, I heard there's not much difference in performance with the latest 7th gen procies

That's a pretty good point.

Though, as for the current situation. I'm not sure if I can get an upgrade right away a lot of changes happened lately

(i don't like cats. Waifu wanted a cat. So we compromised and got 2 cats).

I never knew it was costly to have pets so yeah...

Even better for the pentium.  If you take to long to ugrade the i5 system i7 47*** will become rare and more expensive  (though only to a point) before the prices start to drop. So get the pentium and then get a 6/7/8 gen i7 when you can afford it and they are sub 100-200 depending on the chip.

Cool! i guess I'll go with the pentium. I know it wouldnt have much loss for web dev but do you think it would affect gaming performance? I previously had an 3770 non-k with a GTX 970.

I'm going to be honest, it's not going to be as good as the 3770.  You shouldn't bottleneck the gpu too terribly but cpu intensive games will suffer.

Oh well, back from the start. Probably save until 8th gen comes out. or probably Ryzen.

Thanks for helping me out!

Can you wait till July 27th for r3?  That will save you on the mobo later.

I still have pending work. so waiting is a complete no for me.  I'd love to wait how this competition is going to turn out once Vega and Ryzen Shines(or not) but unfortunately, I have limited a (very) budget and projects pending. not to mention getting a better place for my "workstation" so cats don't mess everything up.

Since the post has already been answered, may I ask what the cat did to your previous PC?

:)

I was cleaning dust off on the ground (cuz table is a bit small with messy stuff on top).
My laziness to prepare a proper place / area to clean the thing caused me my pc. I'm not used to having cats so I didn't know they would come running from somewhere with feet wet(probably playing in the sink) and then decided to run and hide in my pc case with the said components running for a test after cleaning them.

The cats are fine.

I couldn't blame anyone but own carelessness. I had that pc from savings since 1st day college and now gone just after the intention of cleaning.

so yeah. lesson learned.

R3 comes out in 4 days.

Really?! I think it would be a lot longer here in the Philippines but yeah..I really wish I had some extra cash right now so I can get a decent replacement.

I'll see if I can hold my projects or whatever is possible. if not, I'd be sticking with the Pentium G.

Sometimes, you just can't have it all...

Very simply if you cant afford the wait you can't afford the wait.  In that case the pentium -> i7 route works really well, a stock i7 6700k is a powerhouse with great TIM and it won't cost much in a year or two.

Get the pentium for now. But wait a second!!!

Why dont you buy another used motherboard for the i7?

The 3770 will be much much better than either of your other options and much cheaper.
I really doubt the actual CPU died. I have yet to see a post 2009 cpu die. The mobo usually takes the hit. unless you physically destroy it in some way
