So I just got a RPI 3 with a 64Gb SD card, heatsinks, and a 3.5in touch screen for $15. Pretty killer deal since it is new too. I have a project box lying around that fit a pie, battery, and button perfectly for a handheld Retro Pie box. I know how to do everything except for the d pad and buttons. I know it can be done but where can I buy a d pad and some abcc buttons like on a DS or gameboy? Also would I just use the GPIO header or do I need a separate PCB? Thanks!

Trust me, a cheap pad (or even an expensive one) will feel incredibly cheap.  You pretty much have to pay full controller price (~$50) to get a good one it seems, even though you can tell they must make them for less than $1 each

Which, the cheap pre-made pads or the core ripped out of a DS?  USB for the former and idek for the latter... would take some doing, but with the GPIO pins it should be possible to figure out.

Those don't have a true D-pad though iirc, which I think is generally the hardest part (by far) to get right.

You could gut the PCB for the DS buttons and wire them into a USB PCB.

 

I mean, if I can wire this Xbox 360 Wired gamepad PCB into this custom Sega Twin Stick arcade controller, I'm pretty sure you can wire anything into anything else.

Those don't have a true D-pad though iirc, which I think is generally the hardest part (by far) to get right.

It's just 4 individual buttons.  Haven't used one enough to know how different it feels, if at all, but I do know how bad it is when you have to use a shitty D-pad, and sadly most seem to be shitty.

As long as you know what you're doing, you can take any Game Controller PCB and make your own controller. There is a Tutorial out there for making a full sized Pop'n Music Controller with a PS2 Controller PCB. I'm going to link it because it might have tips there you can use.

You could go for something like this, then get something like this.

The rubber pads would go over the contact points on the PCB, then buttons over the rubber pads. You might need to get these to mount the buttons so they stay in place, or if you have access to a 3-d printer you could print them yourself.

You can wire the PCB directly to the Raspberry pi if you follow this guide http://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=57 

You might also want to have a look around http://www.sudomod.com/forum/ to get ideas for your project.
