so am getting a lian li dk q2x desk case (hope u know what i mean) and well i want to make sure it looks nice and i need a storage upgrade i have a 500gb hdd atm and i was thinking of buying 4 250gb 850 evo's putting them in raid and being off to the races if u will. but i have questions as i have never done raid before.

first i dont need max performance this pc is only used for gaming so i just want the drives to run as if they was just a single 1tb ssd so what raid config should i go with.

second with the above raid config is there a limit on how many drives can be used in a raid for the config i would use if so i would just have two raids or 1 raid and a single drive for OS for example.

with 4 ssd's DO NOT USE RAID 0, you will lose all your data if there us an issue with any of the drives. you cauld use raid 5 for a 750GB array with 1 drive redundancy but if your just gaming get a single 1tb ssd

with the lian li desk case i wanted to get get 4 drives purely for looks to make the case look full. so what your saying is use raid 5 on 3 drives and the other drive with say my OS and pictures on so if the raid dies am all good

Does your motherboard support JBOD in the raid options?  If not, you have to run raid 0.

I would advise you to run a single 1TB SSD than 4 smaller drives.  You're 4x-ing your chance of failure.

Workstation:  9800X3D|| Asus X670E ProArt Creator || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || T.Force 7800CL34 || Corsair AX1600i@240V || whole-house loop.

LANRig/GuestGamingBox: 13700K @ Stock || MSI Z690 DDR4 || ASUS TUF 3090 650W shunt || Corsair SF600 || CPU+GPU watercooled 280 rad pull only || whole-house loop.

Server Router (Untangle): 13600k @ P-Core only || ASRock Z690 ITX || All 10Gbe || 2x8GB 3200 || PicoPSU 150W 24pin + AX1200i on CPU|| whole-house loop

Because its a really good drive and will be fine for regular gaming, I have that one my self. It's a hybrid of an HDD and an SSD and is pretty fast actually. 5* as fast as other 7200rpm drives.

JBOD basically glues the drives together and treats them as one large one.  Just a Bunch Of Disks.  If one drive fails you only lose the data on that drive not the entire thing (as you do with raid 0).

Raid also can fuck you over when it comes to managing your partitions.  Sooooo many boot CDs don't properly support Intel raid arrays and see the drives individually.  It's one of the reasons I'm consolidating my 4 SSDs down to 1.
