NAS for Mac and Windows

Go to solution Solved by djneo,

Windows and Mac Os both accept SMB pretty easy, so freenas or just plane windows is great

With freenas you could make a Time Machine Share so that the mac's can backup to it

As part of an experiment over my summer break I am trying to repurpose my old laptop (core i5 8GB RAM 1TB Hard drive) as a NAS, being in a household with both Macs and windows computers, I was wondering what the best file type would be for the NAS so both OS's could access any data on the NAS

Have a look at FREENAS but i would advise running for 24/7 as laptop is not meant to use as NAS. You also could try window server or just have window installed with SMB sharing enabled. It doesn't really matter which file system as you only have one drive, would suggest non important files or have backup.
