Helloo folks!

I am in need of your expertise in upgrading my current PC. I am planning to use some parts of my current build to the new build. Now, my plan is too add a SSD, replace CPU, motherboard and ram cards. Later on after the bitcoin mining, I am looking to replace the GPU. The reason for upgrading is that my CPU cannot handle the video editing programs. It freezes sometimes, slow or get stuck. Also, I play games on it like CS:GO and PUBG on low settings. Even on low settings, I get FPS drops in both games.

Current build summarized:

AMD FX 6300

ASRock Extreme4 970

Nvidia Geforce GTX 950

full list: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/vx6VzM

Upgrade:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 - € 213,95

MSI B350 PC Mate - € 97,95

Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 @3.000Mhz (CMK8GX4M2B3000C15) - €75.95

-

Total: €480,85

----

Nvidia Geforce GTX 950

Samsung Spinpoint 1TB

Cooler Master Elite 331

Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo

Corsair Builder CX430

Akasa USB 3.0 Card Reader

Side information:

-I am not going to overclock

-I have two 60hz monitors (not going 144hz monitors)

-Game: I prefer stable FPS than quality

-I live in the Netherlands, morelikely going to buy the components at azarty.nl .

-My update budget is around €450 euro.

Question to you guys, what do you of my plans? What do you think of the components of the upgrade? Any other cheaper components? Got any other recommandation or suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

You'll need DDR4.  I'd recommend 1x8GB instead of 2x4, which will allow you to add an additional 1x8 for 16GB total later.  (Would rather do 2x8 now so you know they're a matched set).  For Ryzen, I'd recommend 2666,3000,3200 MHz at the minimum.

I second this opinion with this post in the thread on top of pressing the agree badge to stress the importance of this comment.

You do not want more than 2 *DIMMs on Ryzen builds right now (and probably in the future to), so do what @johndms said.

*a DIMM is just the stick the RAM is on

The reason for upgrading is that my CPU cannot handle the editing programs.

Editing programs (I assume you mean video editing) usually like lots of RAM, so this is more reason to go with 2x8 right now. With Ryzen it's best not to cheap out on the RAM.

Hello john! thank you for your comment. I made a typo there! That is the current ram card I have in my build. It should been Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 @3.000Mhz (CMK8GX4M2B3000C15). Doesnt 2x4 GB works (dual channel) work better than single 1x8GB?

You'll never notice a difference in real world content, but 1x8 is the smarter choice for future-proofing.

If I want to add another ram card, then it has to the same card or does it also work with different type but same brand?

You aren't going to overclock, so to save money I think this would be a better board:

https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/ASRock-A320M-Pro4-AMD-A320-So-AM4-Dual-Channel-DDR4-mATX-Retail_1169390.html

You said you prefer stable FPS over quality (I think you mean high FPS by quality), but any Ryzn CPU should be stable at and over 60 fps. Graphics stuttering absolutely can be a CPU issue (like with your fx 6300), but I think it will be caused by your gtx 950 if it stutters under 60 fps with your planned upgrades. I would actually recomend the r5 1400 to cut down on cost with this build...:

https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/vcfbgL

... but you said you do editing. The 6 core would help in editing, but then you go way over budget.

Gaming performance would be very similar with either the 1400 or 1600, but video editting should be a lot better with the 1600. It's hard to reduce the cost of a 4 part upgrade in your PC when 2 of the upgrades are an SSD and RAM since there are world wide shortages on both, it makes those parts a lot more expensive than they should be.

If you are wondering why the RAM looks overkill in this list it's because it is, but with reason. When you want to upgrade the CPU in 4 to 6 years, the offerings on AM4 (since it's supposed to be developed for the next 4 years) will be much better than what you can find today, but the RAM will lag behind the rest of the system when you upgrade the CPU if you get cheap RAM. The RAM on this list will not need to be upgraded in the future.

I guess it could be another brand, but we are talking about first generation Ryzen here. RAM compatibility issues are very real, and you'll probably be stuck at 2133 MHz if the second DIMM is mismatched.

The list I originally provided assumes RAM prices stay high, but when the shortage ends the prices of ram will likely drop a lot, so I don't know what to say. A cheap RAM kit that will just work may be a good option with a 1600 if you want to replace the RAM when (if) prices come back down to reasonable levels in the future. For example:

https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/k3ZYGf

This list actually comes in right at your budget and uses the ATX board and CPU you want.

With Ryzen.. I'm not sure how mixing sizes or brands will work.  The platform is simply too new to take the risk.  From my own point of view, I'd rather spend a bit more now and purchase 2x8 dual channel (My Build) and know it'll be sufficient for several years, than be stuck with 2x4 dual channel.  I guess it's just a matter of opinion, and how much ram you're satisfied with having long term.  I do a lot of gaming/recording and video editing, so 16GB should last me a long time.

Thank you for your detailed recommandations! What if I put few bucks more on the table, what 16GB ram card would you suggest?

I'd hate to recommend something so dang expensive, but G.Skill Trident Z seems to work really well with Ryzen: https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/16GB-G-Skill-Trident-Z-schwarz-weiss-DDR4-3200-DIMM-CL16-Dual-Kit_1111127.html

This is a URL with some search parameters that might help if the last kit is just too far out of reach right now: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/products/memory/#m=17&sort=price&Z=16384002

If it's Flare X or Trident Z it'll work just fine almost guaranteed. You can remove some of the overhead cost with slower memory, but the infinity fabric in Ryzen operates at 0.5x RAM frequency. Faster ram is better. That's why I linked the one kit in the beginning of this post.

It's really sucks that there is a DRAM shortage right now. This is only going to get worse as the new iPhone comes out since it'll need RAM to. Your timing on the upgrade is very unfortunate considering the V NAND shortage (SSD prices) as well. Normally an upgrade like this would be about €50-60 cheaper than what you're looking at now.
