Hello All,

I plan on buying the i7-7700 for my PC build, which I intend to use for video editing and rendering, and I have several questions concerning the memory specs for the CPU.

For memory max size it is stated a 64GB max, does this mean that regardless if I put more than 64GB in the mobo, the CPU will only use up to 64GB?

For max number of memory channels it is stated as 2, does this mean that it can only read from 2 RAM sticks? what if I use 4 sticks?

Also for max number of PCI Express lanes is at 16, does this mean that up to 16 PCI-e cards can be used?

Thanks in advance for all inputs.

ryzen 1700 would be more cost efficient for video editing and render, and for that you should get at least 2400mhz ram, but 3200 is better.

for the 7700k, if you put in more than 16gb/stick, the motherboard wouldn't even post because it doesn't know how to address it (well that is the case for the first gen i3 i tried that on)

it can use upto 4 sticks, with 2 channels. i dont know what a channel is, but more is more efficient i guess.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

you can use 4 sticks of ram, so 2 dimms per channel.

The biggest dim you can get today is 16gb(non buffered non ecc) so you can really put more than that in. There is a good change that it will work with 128gb if those dimms existed.

You can't use more than 64gb or ram on the motherboards that support the cpu. You can use 4 ram sticks but it will run in dual channel meaning each stick will share a memory lane with another stick if your run 4 sticks of ram. As far as pcie lanes goes there are different devices that use pcie lanes and can use anywhere from 1 to 16 lanes. Most gpus only need 4 lanes to run at its max potential though.

I don't think you can install more than 64 GB of DDR4 into a 4-slot motherboard. 16 GB DIMMs are the biggest available, as far as I know.

Dual-channel means that as long as DIMMs are installed in matching pairs, they get a boost in performance. You can have two sets of matching pairs for a total of four.
