Could someone explain or point to a thread to the uses of NAS and home server solutions? I always aee DIY aproaches but I never quite understood the uses for them

i use my NAS to store all of my movies and tv shows that i have saved.

this allows everybody in my house (wife, kids, roommates) to watch any of them on any device.

it also keeps the data off my computer, which means i can turn my computer off when im not home, using a lot less power.
