After messing around with retro pie. I want to make my own arcade box now. I will be getting a raspberry pi 3 shortly and I plan to use Rey's 128gb img or something of a similar manner like the little pixel one. The only part I don't know much about is the input devices. Do most games work fine with a joystick and six buttons? I plan to make it 2 player and need to know where I can get some nice but not too expensive  buttons and joystick. Also I need a board thing to connect all the buttons to USB I assume. I know there are kits online for buttons and joysticks but don't know if they are just a rip off

Just keeping this here as a Not sure if you still want advise on this but i'll give it.

 

A joystick and 6 buttons per player will be fine for most games but you should add a start and select button. retro pie uses them for navigation, menus and reset. (i got 2 smaller buttons and added them between player 1 and player 2) and a player 1 and player 2 button if you plan on using mame.

Don't bother with arduino or trying to get the buttons on to the gpio. just get a generic usb arcade controller, i have had no issues with mine it is plug and play in retro pie, windows and linux. and it comes with pre crimped wires which is nice.

Get buttons with full microswiches, the low profile ones use keyboard switches and feel horrible.

And this last one may just be personal preference but i think the american style bat top arcade sticks are much nicer to use the japanese ball tops, but i will admit the ball top does have that classic arcade look.

The Number and Type of Buttons you'd want depends on the games you plan on installing. Always go with the highest number you'd need. Don't forget the Start/Select/1P/2P buttons if you games call for them. Also make sure you get two other buttons just for the Service and Test Functions that 99% of machines have. Service function usually bring up the internal Game Menu, and the Test button generally gives you tokens or Credits depending on the game.

 

There are many ways you can go about making this, Getting a general USB Controller and taking the guts out and installing them in your build will probably be the easiest, you can also just buy a PCB if you don't wanna waste plastic and toss the case. If you wanna go intermediate get an Arduino, as it can give you more flexibility on how many buttons if you want to install more then what expected.

 

Buttons you can generally get cheap anywhere. Sanwas are the expensive brand and eventually I will recommend upgrading to them, they last longer and feel nicer, but right away getting some cheepo buttons to make it functional isn't a bad idea.

 

With Switches I highly recommend that you do not skimp out on these. Get Omrons. Cherry Switches are not that good (The day they make a mechanical keyboard with Omrons is the day I die happy). They last a very long time, even if you play for 6 hours straight all day every day and slamming on the buttons hard (With play like that, they generally last a good 6 months to a year in my personal experience, if you don't play a game fast and hard then they should last a longer).

 

The Stick is personal preference on what style you want, I do prefer the Japanese Ball Top and they come customization so if you want a specific color scheme it's easier to do.
