How much ram do i need?

which frequencies should i go for?

Often everything up to about 3200 MHz costs within a few dollars of each other, so 3200 is a good place to be. That said, I've heard of issues with Ryzen and certain frequencies/models of RAM, and I'm honestly very uncertain about where that stands right now. Might be worth reading/asking a bit more about that before buying.

I'd say for a gaming system today, you should aim for 16 GB if you can. Most new major games today (along with Windows and reasonable background applications) can easily exceed 8 GB. Having 8 GB is usually still acceptable if you must, but in that case I'd recommend saving for an upgrade as soon as you can. A 2x8 GB kit of DDR4-3200 is ideal, in my opinion, provided that doesn't have any issues on a Ryzen platform.

For gaming, you really only need 8GB of ram unless you are playing games than tend not take up a lot of ram space such as Minecraft and other games. If you know what games you are looking to get make sure that you look into requirements for the game. However, I wouldn't use more than 12gb of Ram if you are only gaming. The only reason you might need 16gb of RAM is if you do video editing or you just do a shit tonne of multi tasking.

8GB of System RAM is fine for 1080p Gaming.

I game and keep a lot of applications open in the background like Chrome with a good amount of tabs open, iTunes, Steam, a shit ton of programs like Pushbullet and remote mouse as background tasks and struggle to hit 8GB of use.

I have only ever ran out of RAM once and that is because Windows 10 had shat itself and had a run away memory leak. Ive never used the HDD that that Window install was on again xD

16gb if you can afford it and there isn't a significantly better place to put it, otherwise 8gb. (like if you don't have an ssd, or that $50 could otherwise be the difference between 1050 ti and 1060, etc.)

that's because of page file. you could run even on 4GB but i personally hate having it take space on my SSD boot drive so I'd still recommend to get 16GB

But if the page file is doing its job it doesn't matter now does it?

I have 480GB SSD for Windows and applications/games.
