Ok bois this is going to be a long one, but ill try to keep it short and sweet.

My friend recently just upgraded his i3 (i havent got a clue) to an i5-6600K (honestly annoyed hedidnt ask me for help because he was prepared to spend alot and i wouldve gotten him a Ryzen build for future reasons)

Anyway he messaged me with regards to the fact that after the upgrade, when he would try to game on it, after about 10 minutes his whole computer freezes. I went to his house yesterday to have a look and see if i can fix it, i first started by checking his temps when idle and under load, pretty nice actually it only hit 45 under load (its only rocket league tbf) but i was certain its not a thermal issue. I checked his drivers and made sure he had new chipset drivers and gpu drivers. they were updated .

So this is the gruesome and probable issue with the build, i went to take the pc apart because i may have assumed the CPU wasnt mounted properly etc, and upon removing the cooler for the CPU i discovered a monstrocity. The Thermal paste is just everywhere. Whoever put the thermal paste on  put it everywhere, the whole tube that comes with the coooler he bought. So i wiped it all of and removed the CPU, but saw that the paste had leaked onto the pins and the actual socket of the board. which scared the shit out of me. So using a new makeup brush (its all his girlfriend had lol) i brushed it  out fpr the mostpart, only a tiny bit was stuck on the floor of the socket on the right side of the middle.

Anyway after remounting with the right amount of paste all seemed well. The computer booted and loaded up, played rocket league for about 4 hours or so and then he messaged me to say its crashed again. I reset CMOS during the repair as well to see if that was the issue.

Specs:

i5-6600K

Coolermaster Hyper 212

Gigabyte MATX board im actually unsure

16GB DDR3 HyperX Fury Ram

Gigabyte GTX 760

Bequiet 650w

the case is kinda irrelivant but its an NZXT S340

Just wanting to know if anyone else has any experience or knowledge on what might be going on.

if id had more time I wouldve looked a little more into it but thats as far as I got

Uhhhhh... does he still have that i3? I'd RMA the CPU and use the i3 while he waits. As long as it wasn't him who applied the thermal paste in the first place.

Well funnily enough the i3 he had was broken when he removed it, i suggested he RMA the i5 and just wait. I guess thats the best option. Honestly the amount of thermal paste was ridiculous. Long story short he asked me to build it but i was working, so he got my brother to do it instead, my brother didnt realize how much thermal paste he needed and made a mistake. Which is fine, but if my friend hadn't been so impatient i would've done it :P

How does someone not realize how much they need and then proceed to put so much that they get it on the pins? Surely he would've realized that was too much... not quite sure if that's concerning or amazing

Well he doesnt build many computers, and it was his first time fitting a CPU cooler NONETHELESS if you are unsure you should do your research

I forgot to add, he put it around the edges of the die and then in the middle, like hes glueing wood or something lmao
