So I was building a cheap PC and something I came across when it was all done, I turned it on the display was cutting off the edges of the screen, like if the resolution was too high. The display is 1366x768 and on HDMI it does not work, but with VGA it's perfectly fine. Thoughts?

so you are running your monitor on VGA right now ? there should be options to manipulate the position and size of the image horizontaly and vertricaly - use these until the image fits into the screen

The thing is, it's an old-ish TV and we can't find any screen position adjustment options on it

mkay ... VGA on TVs is a bit more problematic than on regular monitors. i had this issue on my TV as well ... sometimes it helped to turn the TV on and off again (or switching to a different input and then back to VGA) while leaving the PC on, displaying something that is not a black screen (a bright, colorful desktop background or lockscreen picture might work well) ... that way the TV would sometimes "re-detect" the dimensions of the VGA image and make it fit

i also discovered that TVs often fail to report a correct EDID (the information that tells your computer what resolution and refresh rate your monitor actually supports) thus getting the computer confused wich resolution to use.

my computers detected 1024x768 as native resolution on my 1080p full HD TV ...

oh ... then i missunderstood ... i thought the HDMI did not work AT ALL and you were forced to use VGA instead ... so you had the edges cut when on HDMI ?

have you played around with the aspect ratio/zoom options ? my TV did cut the edges on HDMI when it was in 16:9 but setting it to "FULL" helped

My brother told me he switched it to "game mode" and it now magically works (and thinks it's an xbox 360)

well, randomly fixed itself.......I hate trashbuilds like my brothers (I run a gtx 1060 and a 6600 With a BenQ 120hz monitor I have no issues like this :P)

have you tried your build on that TV ? i believe the PC itself does not have anything to do with it.

it's the TVs that are too stupid to know how to handle a PC

To be sure that you're viewing the right resolution in Windows, you'll want to try to match the resolution with the display you're using.

Right click the Desktop > Display settings > Resolution

from there, make sure it's set to the right resolution. In your case, it should be 1366x768.

Next, verify that your TV's settings are correct using whatever controls are available to you. I'm assuming the correct aspect ratio is 16:9.

If the proper resolution is not available, it could be that you're mistakenly using a generic graphics driver provided by Microsoft. In that case, update through the GPU manufacturer's website

A lot of TVs actually has a 'zoom and crop' function that they will engage on HDMI this is for supporting 'overscan' which is a legacy trait from older television syste,s .  You LIKELY but not necessarily have a menu option in the TV to enable and disable that. So the TV is getting the correct resolution and it's going 'Okay, I should crop and zoom this a bit! :3'

Even my 65" 4K Samsung has this function but it's easily togged in the menues.

This all said, some older/cheaper HDTVs do not have a function to disable this.
