Hey guys, first post in the forum, although I have been here a lot of times in the past...

I want to upgrade my PC that currently has the following components:

AMD 8320

Asus crosshair formula V

16 GB DDR3 @1333

MSI RX480 Gaming X 8GB

180GB Intel SSD

LC Power 650W (not modular)

So, I both play games, record and edit audio, as well as some video. My general direction was to get basically a new rig but keep the GPU and the disks.

As many before me I am running in circles between the i7700 and ryzen 1700.

My instinct tells me that I could go and get everything under 1000€ which would include 16GB, Ryzen 1700, ASUS Hero VI, a 650/750 modular psu (EVGA comes to mind),

watercolling and possibly a case.

But I still have doubts should it be Intel i7700, Ryzen 1700/1700x/1800/1800x.

What do you guys think would be the best move to spend this extra cash I earned?

Thank you in advance,

Jay.

Well the 1700 will give very close to the 7700(k) in games as well as run circles around it in anything that uses threads. A solid 650w PSU is enough for ANY one CPU/GPU combo on the market today, and I still say 16gb RAM is plenty.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

Get a 1700 and make sure the RAM is 3200MHz. A 450W PSU is more than enough, but you might as well go 500W for some headroom. Get a Tier 3 or higher one from this list:

If you play more games than your other uses consider an R5 1600, 6c/12t unlocked for <$200!

Also are you aware the 7700 is locked? If you want the unlocked overclockable version you need the 7700k. 7700k is notorious for its thermal issues so make sure you read up on that topic before considering the i7. Despite its flaws the 7700k is the best gaming CPU if you do nothing but gaming, when other tasks come in to play such as video recording/editing, multitasking, streaming, workstation etc the extra cores on the R5/R7 will really shine.

EDIT: Never buy a Ryzen X model they are bad value. Get the 1600 or 1700 and you can easily overclock it to the same speed as the "higher" tiers.

Ok, so I guess the 1700 is the right choice.

A followup question would be for the mbo and water cooling.

I think the best fit is the Asus Hero VI, but am not sure which cooling solution to go with. Any suggestions?

Also, thanks for the PSU tier list link :)
