Overclockable?

so i have a i7 965 extreme and i was wondering if i could overclock it and how high i can go, i am so far just running a stock fan cooler for it but planning to get a water cooler and my mother board is a asrock x58 extreme

You should be able to, but I'm not sure about doing so with a stock cooler. Wouldn't it be more worth it to put the water cooler money towards saving up for a new system?

yes you can OC it quite far, if you get a water cooler.

yes, intel hasn't innovated they are still perfectly usable and its not like he cant keep the cooler when he upgrades.

Uh, What? The 6600k, which doesn't even have Hyperthreading wipes the floor with the 965, let alone something like a r5 1400.

It depends on what stepping he has from what i'm reading here. Though the bottom post has evidence.

 

I've personally seen my friend take his i7 which is on the same platform to 4.5 though the liquid temp gets a tad warm

That guy has a custom loop. Would be better to just buy a ryzen 1400 + b350 mobo than to make a custom loop just for an 8 1/2 year old cpu.

you dont need a custom loop, modern AIOs are pretty decent compared to an 8yr old custom loop and half the links are dead on these forums lol.

Um... even with a $150 AiO, it's still cheaper than a new system.  

You must be thinking a new system only includes a CPU, but even the 6600k you mentioned earlier starts at like, $220, already breaking that $150 mark.  Then you have to realize if you're buying a new motherboard, AMD or Intel, you're probably going to have to get DDR4 RAM, so you can't bring over your RAM.

Then with Intel, you have to buy a Z170 or Z270 board...

So if you went Intel (since you mentioned the 6600K), going with the cheapest available...

Keep in mind I had to include a CPU cooler because Intel doesn't with their K skus.

It would be cheaper to buy the AiO.

LGA 1366 based CPUs aren't bad at all by any means.  They still can last even at least a couple more years with a decent overclock.

And yet you are still missing my point. 

1. I keep on asking if someone can find me a 965 that has been overclocked to 4.5GHz on an AIO. I haven't seen any.

2. Regardless of whether the OP can reach a 4.5GHz overclock, it is a much better use of money to save up that ~$150 for a new system.

3. The only thing close to 4.5GHz I have seen was on a custom loop, which is much more expensive than $150.

 

The point is, don't invest in band-aids for a 8 1/2 year old system; save up for a new system that outperforms it in every situation, consumes less power, creates less heat, actually has support for things like PCIE 3.0, and where the motherboards have usb 3.0.
