Soundcards. I use a Creative Labs Soundblaster Recon 3D because of its capability to encode surround sound directly to Dolby Digital. This way I only have to run one optical S/PDIF - connection to my Surround-Receiver. Only expensive mainboards have this kind of feature and it's not even advertised well.

EDIT: Drawback of live encoding to Dolby Digital: Sound Latency. But I only recognize this when my headphones are plugged in as well, because then I hear the sound from the headphones some milliseconds before I get it from my receiver.
