Given the current mining boom (mentioned by other posters), It's going to be some time before the cards return to a reasonable price point. If whoever offered to get you a graphics card for a gift was willing to spend say $350 - $400, it might be a good idea to discuss them just giving you the cash. That way, you can throw it into your savings account and wait until this all blows over. You'll probably only earn pennies on the interest, but it's better than nothing.

Of course, it's just a suggestion.

That is some unfortunate timing. It's not a great time to be buying PC parts right now.

If your budget is getting tight, you might want to go with Dan's suggestion and get a gently used last-gen high end Graphics card.
