Hey guys, this is my first PC build i am going to be doing on my own and am really looking forward to it.Here is a list of parts i have in mind:

  • Case - Corsair Obsidian 800D
  • Motherboard - Asus Maximus VI formula
  • CPU - Intel I7-4770K
  • Memory - Corsair Dominator Platinum 8GB (2x4GB, 1600MHz)
  • Cooler - Corsair H110
  • Storage - WD BLACK 1TB x2 and Samsung 840 Evo 120GB x2 and am looking at a SSD cache drive.
  • GPU - Really want to go SLI in this build so not really sure at the moment.
  • PSU - Corsair AX860i
  • Fans - Changing the two stock fans on the H110 to corsair Sp fans and going to include some more Corsair AF Series fans within the case 140mm and 120mm.

  • Budget. How much are you willing to spend? Depends on how much money i pull together after Christmas so all options open.
  • Do you need or already have peripherals? (this can add to costs) Already equipped with peripherals, only thing i may consider doing is upgrading my monitor.
  • Do you overclock or want to get into overclocking? I would really like to experience and try overclocking as usually i would just stick to stock stats of the item and that does just seem a tad boring.
  • Do you plan on going for custom water cooling now, or in the future? The idea of water cooling really intrigues me and i would love to try it, however it also frightens me due to the possibility of things going horribly wrong and damaging my new components which cost allot of money.
  • OS. Do you need a new one? I am sorted for an OS as i have windows 8.1
  • Do you render movies or Photoshop pictures? I am a graphic design student so i will be using and editing within Photoshop allot, i am also going to be experimenting with Cinema 4D and other software. I also enjoy video editing once every now and then.
  • What kind of games do you like to play? I like to keep my options open and don't like to stick to one kind of genre so i would say everything and anything.
  • What resolution will you be playing at? //or would like to play at. I am currently playing at 1920 x 1080 but i would like and am considering on upgrading to 2560 x 1440.

Thank for reading! This is going to be a major step up from my current PC so would really like some feedback.  :)

That will be epic. Give us a budget. At least an idea, so we can build you one. Giving us a budget like $500 - $2000 is better than no budget at all.

My Build Log on PCPartPicker FX-6300, ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3, MSI 7870 GHz Edition, Corsair Vengeance LP 1x8GB, 1TB WD Blue, Fractal Core 1000 USB 3.0, Corsair CX600, and my most recent addition that I've had forever and isnt new is a 80GB WD800 for Linux, Lenovo ThinkPad X131e, ASUS Transformer TF300T, Galaxy Note 3 Sister dropped it in a puddle I now have to use a Samsung Brightside, Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250ohm version, Blue Yeti  #TheRealKEH-JEFF | "Sometimes, if were lucky, in Australia, a family has 2 kangaroos to pick up the kids with" - marto | Your entry here | Remember kids; just because Linus has a video on it, doesn't mean that its the best choice | ts3.wferr.com the best TeamSpeak Abide by the CoC | Looking for build help? I wouldn't get the 800d anymore, grab the 750d or 900d, but the 900d would look silly without a custom watercooling loop imo

current system:  i5 2500k @4.5ghz cooled by antec 620 - asrock z77 extreme 4 - 8gb corsair RAM - MSI Twin Frorz 7950 in crossfire - XFX 850w  - Fractal design R4 - samsung 840 120gb ssd - 500gb wd blue hdd - 1440p korean qnix monitor (love it!)

Get the 750D or the 900D (really overkill, but whatever you like). You could do with a cheaper motherboard than the M6F, cheaper RAM than the Platinums, cheaper PSU than the AX (RM850 is more than enough). Get a single larger SSD as a boot drive. Get a 780, and add another later.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-5820K, Corsair H115i, Asus X99-Deluxe/USB 3.1, G.Skill Ripjaws4 32GB 2800MHz CL16, Zotac RTX 3070, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB in Angelbird Wings PX1, Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, 5*Seagate 12TB, Cooler Master V1200, Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, Windows 10 Pro. Phillips 328P6VUBREB, Corsair Vengeance K95 RGB Cherry MX Brown, Logitech G502 X Plus, Sennheiser HD700.

AYANEO 2S: AMD 7800U, 32GB 7500MHz, 2TB WD SN850X. Windows 11.

Thanks for the feedback! whats wrong with the 800d? My budget is like $2000 and yeah i think im going to change the ram due to the price maybe vengeance pro instead. Also do you think you guys could recommend some water cooling parts so i can see what i would need and where to get started? I think i am going to use a red and black color scheme as well.

It looks like you're spending a lot of money which don't really improve performance...

2000 USD right?

This fits your colour scheme, the case has plenty of watercooling space, the PSU will easily run any two cards in SLI/CrossFireX. You have plenty of cash to spare for GPUs. I'd recommend 780 if you're gaming at 1440p or less, 290 for 1080p*3 or more. I don't recommend the 780Ti or the 290X because you're planning on going multiple GPUs anyway, and the price to performance on the non-Ti and non-X cards is way better.

I'm not sure about specific parts because I haven't made a custom loop before, but I'll tell you what I know based solely on what I've heard from reliable sources (like Linus).

Pump: Swifttech MCP655.

Tubing: Primoflex Pro LRT.

Reservoir: Any good tube reservoir would do.

Fittings: Get stuff from Bitspower.

Radiators: I'd recommend the surface area of at least 2*120mm per processing unit you have in the loop. Slightly more is better.

Waterblocks: Get stuff from Koolance or Swifttech.

Fans: Noctua NF-F12. Silverstone Air Penetrators. NB eLoops. Corsair SP120.

I know the above aren't very specific, but use them as a guideline, or wait for someone else to respond. You're probably looking at 2-300$ in watercooling parts alone (assuming CPU waterblock and one GPU waterblock).

This build is great for your needs. However, if you wish, you could get an LGA2011 build for more processing power and PCI-e bandwidth. For graphics, choose between AMD or Nvidia based on which programs you use would prefer CUDA or OpenCL acceleration. For gaming, either card is excellent so that doesn't matter.

haha i dunno  :P Thats allot cheaper than i thought actually, don't think i mentioned this but i kinda would like this pc build to be future proof due to the fact i probably wont be upgrading anytime soon got any pointers or tips?

I'd advise against trying to future proof a build because the concept doesn't exist (unless you're on an unlimited budget). I can guarantee within six months of you completing this build there will be better hardware, and within two years, this will start looking sort of slow. That said, the parts I've suggested, combined with a GTX780/R9-290 are just about as fast as possible today (without having to may a massive premium on the top tier card for a 10-15% better performance), and an SLI/CrossfireX of either GPU will keep you happy for two years at least.

Just accept that even though you're at the bleeding edge now, there is going to be better :)

PS-Get a reference design graphics card if you're going to watercool, since most waterblocks are made for the reference designs.

This is an LGA2011 build. It is more expensive, but you have a very significant processing power jump over the LGA1150 build. I don't know whether you need it, so that is upto you and the programs you wish to use for your work. Also I've left in dual channel 16GB memory in case you want to expand to 32GB sometime later, even though LGA2011 is better optimised for quad channel memory. You could get the P9X79-Pro motherboard from Asus (approx same price) and have quad channel memory from the start and still have room for expansion, but it is blue in colour. It is an excellent motherboard and I'd recommend it as much as the Formula.

It really depends how much you need this system now, how reliable those rumours are, and how fast and expensive those products will be.

If you're not desperate for this system now, and could save up some more till Maxwell comes out (if it does come out in Q1 2014), it couldn't hurt to wait, but if you get a great deal on the current generation during this period, get it. You wouldn't regret it.
