Ok so I'm very frustrated and angry because my external HD is having trouble to open.

I have a WD ext. HD 1 TB and it worked fine for 2 years. This is a 2 part problem.

First the HD renamed itself to Local Disk but I could still see how much storage was used under My Computer. But it wouldn't open and I had to repair with some software to finally get access to my files. (name of HD restored back etc)

Only few days later which is today, my HD went back to "Local Disk" and now the blue storage-use bar is gone and it asks me to format it

Done some research and I tried "TestDisk" and analyzed the HD. After many hours of waiting and praying I get this:

testdisk_zpscebdebe8.png

and then when continuing

td_zps03e7e1b8.png

What do I do now? All hope lost?

And how secure are backing up files? This could happen to anyone and everything can be gone in a second. It is a bit scary :/

Also as a sidenote, my ext HD needs extra power (wall plug) and recently I decided to leave it connected to the wall at all times. Could that result an ext. HD to fail?

Any help appreciated (y)

You're image links are messed up.

Anywho, sounds like your partition table is corrupt. Did your machine bsod before this started? Leaving the drive plugged in shouldn't be a problem. I've had a Seagate 1 Tb external for probably close to six years now and it still works although I think it's just starting to show signs of failure (aka click of death). Have you run a virus scan? I've seen malware do some funky things to drives on infected machines. Boot into safe mode and run whatever you've got.

DO CHKDSK FIRST if it doesnt work then do the below

Download Minitool Partition Wizard (home edition will do)

-Remove the partition using minitool partition wizard

-Click partition recovery wizard

-Select the disk where partition was located in

-Select the space where partition was in

-make a quick scan if quick scan doesn't work make a full scan

-if your hdd shoved up click finish
