That rule applies for ZFS, unRAID does not need that much. ZFS needs RAM to properly work.

 

To OP: It depends on how much additional applications (Docker) and virtual machines you will want to run there. For pure NAS purposes, 4GB could be enough.

Jap, I know, and I run a NAS with 4GB of DDR3 just fine, but I guess it is a rule of thumb, that also makes sense in terms of budged, if you're going to spend 400 bucks on storge alone, why not drop another 50, to get to the 16GB barrier, where you are pretty much set for the next X years
