HTPC CPU/APU

[Helltech]

Would an AMD Athlon 5350 still be a perfect fit for someone who wants a silent HTPC that does nothing except video playback? I havn't looked into building a HTPC in a few years and wonder if there are better/cheaper/smarter alternatives. I know that it being a quad core APU with 25w TDP was pretty nice.

Cheaper - No

Better and smarter - Yes - i5, i7, R5, R7, Upcomming R3

Well cheaper/passive cooling is all that matters for this person as long as 4k playback is fine. So going with that, then.

I'm running the slightly more powerful 5370 (2.2GHz instead of 2.05GHz) in my media/plex server and it's working just fine.  I've been able to stream through my apartment and to my cell phone when I'm at work.  Previously it was used as an HTPC and worked well.  I haven't used it for anything more than 1080p blu ray rips so I don't know if it would handle 4K content.
