So I've got the majority of my build all planned out but as I'm still fairly new to all of this I was curious if the oc version of the asus rog stirx was worth the extra cash. I think the price difference isn't huge but if there's really no point then I won't waste the money.

No, no they aren't. Whichever brand makes whichever card doesn't matter most of the time, the only factor to consider is aesthetics.

And the cooler. The Asus STRIX, EVGA FTW, and MSI Gaming and Gaming X cards have some of the best coolers. Only reason to get a crappy cooler is if you're just going to put a water block on it.

EDIT: Also, according to JayztwoCents videos, the EVGA FTW3 is the best 1080 Ti, followed by the Asus STRIX and MSI Gaming X. I'll try and find the vid.

the only difference between the asus strix and the oc version is a little factory overclocking, you could likely do better on your own anyway so no reason to throw money at it

No, overclocking a gpu is very easy, hit me up and I can go through it for you. Only reason to get that version is for the extra fans. I am planning on getting a 1080 ti, but I am going to water cool it with either a hybrid cooler or custom loop. Otherwise if its on air I would do the extended GPU with the extra fan simply from a standpoint of cooling so I can overclock it myself.

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

Woah, 5 FPS higher than the other model! This was definitely worth the extra 50 bucks.

fps, meh. All the 1080 Tis will be close to each other. It's the cooler that's the difference. The FTW3 has EVGA's latest iCX cooler, the Gaming X has MSI's latest TwinFrozr or whatever, etc. The extra 50 bucks are probs for the nice RGB lettering on the side, plus the fancy cooler. it'll let you OC with better temps, making your card last longer and be happier. :D

Bought the evga SC2.  Acceptably quiet for me, even under full load.  The reference cooler and fan are LOUD, but it will hit the same clock as my card with no customer OC.

Get the cheapest one that you like the look of that has an acceptable noise level for you.

the short answer is no, if you're manually overclocking, its not worth it.

The longer answer is that the "OC cards" are of slightly higher ASIC quality. Not that they went through any specific "binning" process exactly (not in the way you would think anyway) but their ability to hit higher clocks at lower relative voltages within manufacturer parameters is what makes them feel like they can charge more for it. If you're manually overclocking however, the difference between the stock and OC cards is largely between the voltages (and therefore heat) they run at, but the upper end of a manual overclock range will be pretty much the same between any two identical pascal GPU's (that is, two 1080ti's, two 1080's, two 1070's, etc).
