Gtx 960m VS Gtx 1050

As the title suggests which is better for the price a 6700hq, 16 gb ram, gtx 960m for $500 or a similarly specced PC but with a 1050 for $750. I will be using it for 1080p gaming and maybe really light games ( older games/ indie games ) at 4K or 1440p

I don't really mind thermals as long as it doesn't thermal throttle and power consumption the laptop have big enough batteries, all I really care about is fps/$

Which laptop and laptop model are you looking at?
theres a good chance notebookcheck.net has a detailed review on both models

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960M.138006.0.html

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Notebook.178614.0.html

if your scroll down to the bottom of the review for each GPU you can see which laptops include the particular GPU

Note: Dont bother clicking the "external review" links for the laptop, those ones are not detailed

1050 performs better in the long run and now. I'd go for that

The $250 difference isn't worth it, what are the models?

Gtx 960m = ASUS ROG GL551JW-WH71 15.6"

Gtx 1050 = Dell Inspiron 15 7567

Not at all worth it, get the 960m.  The performance is so close to the point that 250 bucks absolutely destroys the fps/$ ratio.

I've found an offer at a local tech shop of a laptop with a 1050 7300hq and 8gb of ram for $650. That should get a higher fps/$ right?

Would $150 ruin the fps/$ ratio

Yeah. 4-5% performance isn't worth an extra 30+% in cost.

I've looked at comparisons and they say the 1050 is about 25% faster is that true

Oops, thinking of the difference between a 1050 ti and 970m :/

Fps per dollar still isn't as good but performance is better on the 1050.
