Hi all,

So recently the company I work for started growing at quite the pace, they have now asked me to provide quotes and so forth as they want a server added to the office. Personally I haven't really worked with servers since I finished studying a few years ago hence why some help is needed.

The company only offers chat based online support to customers, all the programs used are browser based and require no installation.

The server will mainly be used to put all the machines on a Domain mostly for Roaming profiles and better control over software deployment and security, no web hosting or anything like that.

So what I am not all the way sure about is the Physical hardware needed to run this, at any given point 20-25 people will be connected to the domain, however this might go up to 35 by the end of the year so need some headroom for growth. Server 2012 R2 std will be used and most PC's are using Windows 10 x64.

Any advise or ideas for the newbie will be appreciated :)

Thanks

B

I may be able to help, doubt it, but maybe, I normally deal with second/third/fourth/too many hands to count hand server stuff, guessing from the sounds of it you need CPU power. I don't know for sure though if it's just CPU power you need. Secondly What's the budget and is there a set amount of storage needed for the server or is there only the OS needing to be stored on it

Budget will be based more around the quotes I provide however I'm looking around the 30k (I live in South Africa) which would be 3000.00 USD. I want to set it up create local profiles on the PC's which will be backed up to the server, Storage wise each employee needs 1gb at max and we have 80 employees now so storage I'm not that worried about.

ok I can work with that, give me a few moments to see what I can rattle up for you. I will go with 1TB of RAID 1 storage, as it is relatively cheap, and more than enough for you to expand into if you need to do so

Your probably looking at the single socket tower range of servers with Windows Server Essentials.

if OS isn't needed you can get a dual 8 core server in that budget which would be fun

I wrote all this before you said you dinny need it so bugger it I'll post it anyways

assuming OS is included in the budget, I would suggest something like this maybe.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TYpGgL

It would be quite good, the GPU included is very basic, and is only there as a display adaptor as the CPUs don't have onboard, if you don't need said GPU don't get it.

The SSDs could be turned onto HDDs if you don't need the speed of an SSD, which would save money, which could be used elsewhere or not at all.

The 2 8 cores I would imagine is more than enough for your work load, especially with a 2.66GHZ base and a 3.4 turbo, they should have all the horses you need.

There is dual 1000Mbps LAN connectors on the motherboard which should be fast enough. And more than you need.

RAM I don't know how much you need but 32GB will be more than enough I would imagine, letting you again scale up. It is ECC, and I admit it doesn't look nice but it works.
Case it's cheap does the job, has all the right mounting holes, looks alright and servery, so I doubt you boss will complain with it. I didn't know if you wanted rackmount or not and Part Picker doesn't do rack mount anyways far as I can see.

PSU is a teir 1 PSU so is meant to be great there shouldn't be any issues with it in any way.

CPU coolers, they are overkill, but they with it's TDP of 140W so it should keep the CPUs under 70C. I would imagine.

Well that depends if the business in question is willing to accept the risk of building out a server from parts and covering all the support aspects of that. Won't be getting very close to your build you just posted from HPE/Dell/Lenovo etc.

oh I get that, I made that half because he asked, and half because I wanted to see what I could make with $3000 for a server environment. And yea the support possibly could be worth it, same time if you know what your doing, or know where to look when stuff needs fixing, then building it yourself is fine. And yea you wouldn't get near that from them which is why I was building a server for a "here's what you could do if you wanted to" case rather than a "build this this will be great" servers are one of the limited cases where pre builts can be worth it, other two cases being low end PCs, when you have a small budget e.g. £300 under and laptops cause you can't make them yourself, easily, yet

Based on that then I would build out a server with two VMs, Windows Server Standard has rights for two virtual instances per 1 license. One VM as the Domain Controller and the other as the File Server and WDS.

It's best practice to not have a domain controller acting as a file server.

You can buy servers off of Dell's website so you can add that to your list of options. It's also advisable to contact some local IT support companies and ask for a quote, this wont cost any money.

Dell Price $3,393.67

Same Dell server but slightly worse spec from https://www.server-warehouse.co.za came to R48,177.00, buy direct from Dell.

might also wanna get another hot swap HDD with that server as well form RAID purposes, as in the unlikely event of a drive failure you don't want to lose all the date on those HDDs especially in a business environment

The owner of "too many" computers, called

The Lord of all Toasters (1920X 1080ti 32GB)

The Toasted Controller (i5 4670, R9 380, 24GB)

The Semi Portable Toastie machine (i7 3612QM (was an i3) intel HD 4000 16GB)'

Bread and Butter Pudding (i7 7700HQ, 1050ti, 16GB)

Pinoutbutter Sandwhich (raspberry pi 3 B)

The Portable Slice of Bread (N270, HAHAHA, 2GB)

Muffinator (C2D E6600, Geforce 8400, 6GB, 8X2TB HDD)

Toastbuster (WIP, should be cool)

loaf and let dough (A printer that doesn't print black ink)

The Cheese Toastie (C2D (of some sort), GTX 760, 3GB, win XP gaming machine)

The Toaster (C2D, intel HD, 4GB, 2X1TB NAS)

Matter of Loaf and death (some old shitty AMD laptop)

windybread (4X E5470, intel HD, 32GB ECC) (use coming soon, maybe)

And more, several more
