Graphics card for 300w PSU PC

Webs999

Hi, I've a HP P6558UK. It's got a 300W PSU (HPD3006AD) on which it states OUTPUT +5.08V 25A, +12V 19A, +3.3V 18A, -12V 0.3A, +5.08Vsb 2A

I've two hard drives, one a smaller SSD with windows on it, one a WD Red.

The processor is an Athlon Phenom II X6 1035T 2.6GHZ.

Currently it has a HD 5450 graphics card. What I want to know is which - if I do NOT wish to upgrade the PSU, are the best graphics cards I could safely replace this with?

I won't risk a 1050ti in there because who knows what that PSU is made of. a 1030 should be fine since it uses similar amount of power as the hd 5450. However, I would consider buying a 400w good psu and then a 1050ti, even if that means the psu is left outside and the case will never be shut

What's the manufacturer of your PSU? More than a few PSUs listed as 300W out there are actually more like 150W-180W units in reality, and because your CPU already drains 95W, it's important to know what type of PSU you have.

Hmmm, don't want to take any risks, the 1050Ti sounds like it MIGHT be ok for my psu but not certain?

I've never upgraded a power supply. Is it easy enough to install something like:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-VS450-Power-Supply-Unit/dp/B00LMBTO7Q  (assuming that's decent enough)

The PC is quite old - looks like a 24 pin connector to motherboard, then there's a 4 pin connector which also looks to be connected to the motherboard, a connector with P3 written on it to the DVD drive, and two connectors (linked to each other) to the HDD. Would that be compatable with any modern PSU?

It's a Chicony PSU made in China. It's crap. The 5450 eats up 20W, and I wouldn't dare push it much higher than that. It's going to be damn near impossible to find a halfway decent card at that TDP, though. I'd stick with my GT 1030 recommendation if you're going to upgrade, but wait for those to start hitting the used market at a much more reasonable $50 price point.

Sounds like I should abandon plans to keep the PSU, and should change that too. But trying to work out what PSU would be compatable - mine has 24 pin and 4 pin connectors which both look like go to the motherboard, but the corsair one seems to have 24 pin then 8 pin for cpu

An 8-pin connector is designed to be used as either a full 8-pin or a single 4-pin. It splits right down the middle for it. Something like a Corsair CX450M or Seasonic M12II or S12II would be perfect for this build. Even an EVGA 500W white unit would do just fine if you stick with a low-draw card like a 1050 Ti. If you want to go for something like an RX 570, I'd drop the EVGA white unit from consideration and go with the CXM or Seasonic.
