Question about HDD cooling/mounting

Go to solution Solved by ProjectBox153,

In a perfect world you could have them horizontally mounted. It's not as hard on them that way. For cooling, I'd just blow some air on them. Unless you have one drive that runs particularly hot, or they will be in an enclosed space, they may not even need cooling, but it can't hurt.

I'm building a little open rack storage area and was wondering two things. First, is it okay to have my drives mounted like this? I've seen this orientation in servers so didn't know if it would work. Secondly, is the 200mm fan I have in the picture in the optimal position for best cooling of these drives or should it be top mounted, etc? Thanks!

That mount style is totally fine, and I'd say the fan orientation is fine as I imagine the airflow will be better that way, rather than blowing into a hard surface right underneath.
