Building your own router isn't really necessary. It's more for the advanced people (and Linus, but that's a different story) who want more configuration and low level access to what is done and how, as well as the hardware. Normal people don't need one.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Wait so do you pay for data? To pfsence?

No, it's just a router software.

Yes, just buy one. Even with the amount of devices I connect to my network, I still don't need one. Just a normal Wi-Fi enabled router and a switch will work for most people (once again, unless your name is Linus).

Ok also if my switch is fast does it make a difference if my router is not as fast

A bit of a run down on the feature list - pfSense can do

- Firewalling

- Multiple WAN's (load balanced & failover)

- Router level VPN

- PPPoE RADIUS authentication (servicing customers with data links)

- DHCP server functions

etc...

Your ISP router can already do the main functions you require (routing, firewall, dhcp).

Theres absolutely no reason to build one for 99.99% of people - especially for home.

There are plenty of router appliance options out there - that are much easier to use, cheaper, and lower power.

Your router speed doesnt really matter, unless you have a connection above 100Mbit, especially on a small home network.

Can anyone recommend a wireless acsess point so the wifi will reach the end of a the house?

do I need 2 routers if I want to wire my pc to the router but it's on the other side of the house?

Depends on the size and construction of the house.

You could get away with a repeater in the middle of the house in most cases (such as by TP-Link), you may wish to use Powerline (Belkin make some good powerline kits) or if you want a decent strong AP, you could go for something like a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-Pro which should typically reach most homes.

You don't need 2 routers, you only require one router in a home setup.

You may wish to have multiple switches, repeaters or AP's around the house, but you only ever need a single router.
