Find and delete duplicate files?

What's the safest and easiest way in your opinion to find and delete duplicate files automatically?

I'd appreciate something with immediate results and GUI to deselect possible errors / general overview.

hmm I am unaware of third party software. I tend to avoid them as I don't really trust them

Same here, that's why I'm asking.

to remove duplicates the safe way. Reorganize your files. Create folders and move them by hand =) then you'll see if there are duplicates.

If I was to do this, it would take me weeks.

if it's mostly images, I'd suggest Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder (link to official site) .  That'll find all the similar ones.  If you sort them by similarity, you'll immediately see the duplicates and can then decide which one to delete.

 

For other files I have no idea though.

There are various apps for duplicate file removal, most of them are regularly compiled into lists for removal guides. After reading a bunch of them and finding most of the content of this type useless, like Mac factory reset advise found in every support topic, I decided that there is nothing better than good old CCleaner. At least it doesn't require any additional jumping through the hoops and finds all kinds of files. And it's fast. Other suggestions, like SearchMyFiles can be good, but they're generally not as thorough.
