Howdy all,

 

I'll be building my third PC in five years to update my personal gaming rig.  I am and likely always will be Team AMD, so save your Cherry MX keystrokes on the "should've gone with Intel/Nvidia" comments.

 

I plan to wait for the release of RX Vega in order to officially complete my build.  So far, I've chosen the components listed below (and ordered or already have all of them, so this post is really for helping plan future upgrades).  This will be my first SFF build, and it's definitely going to be a change of pace for me, as I'll be transitioning from having an ultra-tower to something HTPC-sized.

 

Any suggestions and comments are appreciated, and let me know if and how any of you plan on building SFF Ryzen rigs!

 

Old Rig (built in summer 2013, upgraded GPU from Nvidia GTX 260 in mid-2014):

Case: NZXT Phantom 820

CPU: AMD FX 8350

GPU: Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290

RAM: 4x4GB G-SKILL Ripjaws X (unsure about the speed, I don't have it in front of me at the time of writing this post)

Boot SSD: Kingston 120GB from oldest rig from 2009

Mass Storage: WD Black 2TB (WD2003FZEX)

MoBo: Asus M5A99X

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO

PSU: Rosewill 1000W semi-modular

 

New Rig (Build log post will be linked when I actually build it):
Case: Silverstone Raven RVZ02B

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1800X

GPU: Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290 (eventually will be replaced with top-end RX Vega card)

RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000

Boot SSD: 500GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 (Edit: 512GB Intel 600p M.2)

Mass Storage: 2TB Seagate FireCuda 2.5" SSHD

MoBo: Biostar X370GTN Racing

CPU Cooler: Cryorig C7 (anyone have any better suggestions--with data to back it up--for the CPU cooling?  I've heard mixed reviews on the C7)

PSU: Corsair SF600

How come?  The higher base clock speeds were desirable for me, there's a touch more OC headroom, and I also do quite a bit of content creation, so the better performance on the higher number of threads was appealing.  I was highly considering the 1700, however, because the PPD was seriously tempting.

All Ryzen chips clock to within 100mhz of each other. And the 1700x and 1800x clock exactly the same.

the 1700 is exactly the same as the 1800x besides clock speeds, and ryzen seems to be stuck at 4ghz clock speeds. the $200 saved could have went to other parts in your build.

Hmm... I wasn't aware of that.  I can't say I do much by way of overclocking, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about here, but with the SFF, I thought it'd be safest to go with the higher base clock speed for best thermal performance, as opposed to letting the lower-clocked CPUs run hotter with a more intense OC and potentially thermal throttle based on the limited cooling available in the case I've chosen.

Nope, they run at similar clocks, with similar voltages and similar temps. The 1700 is effectively a 1800x when overclocked

The difference is so little there is a 99% chance you will get to 1800X speeds.

R7 1700 = 65W

1800X = 95W

 

 

Should be fine with some OC.
