i7-7700K?

I currently have a i5 4690k. It is slacking a lot is there any point in upgrading now to a i7-7700k? Or should I wait for something better/wait for prices to go down, since a  lot is happening right now.

Depends on your usage. If you're just gaming, you could just go with a i7-4790K and save yourself a ton of cash in the process.

I'm currently doing a lot of encoding and decoding while gaming though. For some reason my CPU usage hits 100% in CS:GO which really isn't a demanding game that with OBS recording at low settings. I just want to make sure.

Then get a Ryzen 5 1600 or a Ryzen 7 1700, they should be better for your needs

If you're prepared to go onto a new platform, might as well hop onto the R7 1700 train instead for the extra cores/threads it offers.

The 7700K, of course, but if you are encoding and decoding while gaming, more cores will definitely help

The i7-7700K has better single-threaded performance, but if you're encoding/decoding while gaming, the R7 1700 is going to be the better choice.

If you're streaming, jumping ship to a 1600 or a 1700 might be worth doing.

The 1700 is also overclockable, you can take it to 3.9 ghz. I think it's a better option.

No, I was using x264. I tried QuickSync and NVENC but the quality for both was terrible - even on max.

Okii, what are the temps like. You know the AMD situation, I will end up overclocking it but not too much that it fries :P. Would it survive with the Cooler Master Hyper 212X?

not at 3.8ghz. you need liquid to crank up the R7's. The build below stays below 80*C.

I have just finished my exams and looking for a new cpu since this one ain't cuttin' it. I wouldn't be able to afford liquid cooling not a AIO - they all start at about £100, as well as a new CPU.

Ahahahhahah, I'll probs save for a new mobo first. Didn't think I'd need a new mobo when started this post. A decent fan is about £50, then with a decent mobo £120 and then the CPU ~£300. Just mad. Well I need a mobo if I wish to further build at all so I'll get that first - shouldn't take me more than a couple of months ;). Thanks guys, thanks for being frank with me

212x isn't worth it, the stock cooler is pretty much as good.

 

With stock cooler you could probably reach 3.6-3.7 ghz or so, at 70-80C. If you go for a $50 cooler to go with it you could probably reach a bit higher, maybe 3.9 or 4 ghz if you get a good 1700.

The reason I got it was because I needed a quick buy since my stock one broke.

 I assumed you were buying it now, not that you already had it.

 

You could probably reach 3.7 ghz then, maybe 3.8 if you're lucky. Temps probably would be in the 70s.
