I am looking more and more into then world of folding right now, and I am curious about multi processor folding, I was hoping someone from this awesome section of the community could help me out, I am looking for a cheap ($200 - $300) 2 or 4 processor folding machine, I don't have a lot of money as it is right now which is why I am asking to see if this is possible, could I spend the money and with the components I buy actually make enough PPD to make it worth while ? As it stands I make about 10k PPD I am hoping I can muster up a system to bump that at least 30K (The more the better)

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thank you

  Nathan (L.E.D)

EDIT:

Would it be worth folding these ? They are just lying around so if I could put them to use, that'd be great.

$200 to $300 will not be enough from scratch to be worth it, and your Xeons would have pretty dismal PPD.

My suggestion: Spend $300 on a newest generation graphics card and fold away on the Core 17 projects. You'll easily make or exceed 30k PPD, if that's your goal.

Whaler's going to have a guide up about 4P... eventually, so that'll have more information. If you want, look at my 4P rigs and copy-paste the specs of the different parts into eBay and see how much they cost. If you're lucky maybe you'll come across something you can buy, but I still think a new graphics card would be your best bet for that money.

I mean, my first rig cost about $550, so if you can get more money you'll be able to put one together. My second was $200, but that was at an auction at a nearby business and I don't believe you can actually put one together for that price.

You have to remember: The PSU alone will cost around $100 depending on the quality you want. The motherboard is $100 at the absolute cheapest, and you'll need processors that can complete BigAdv projects which, unless you're lucky, cost around $50 each minimum, of which you need four of. Then there's RAM, heatsinks, fans, somewhere to put it, etc. if they aren't included with the motherboard (sometimes they are).

If you don't fold BigAdv on multi-processor machines, your money is better spent on a graphics card. You'd get way more PPD and can actually use it for something else.

BigAdv also requires Ubuntu 12.04... which is a pain in the rear if you've used Windows since you were 3.

I once was a poor man, but then I found a crown.

i agree with Imaginaerum $300 wont get you much as far as ppd goes you a cheap 4p machine will cost $500 unless you get a vary good deal. i would go with a gpu. for $300

Well, Ok, So you say that I am better off buy a $300 GPU, I have no system for that to go in, I would have to build another computer for that to go in, which I am not interested in that as  wanted to explore the world of multi processor folding,

Lets say that I could save up about $500 how would this suite me instead of the $300 I had before ? If I can't get anywhere I almost think that $500 will get me a decent GPU folder with way LESS heat, but I want to think about me options,

Thank you guys for the help thus far.

I would like to see some input on this as I have treid and failed to come up with a cheap machine.

It is unrolling here now, Just keep an eye on this thread, I assume something will come out of this, I hope. You can follow the thread too if you want, there is a button at the top that says Follow, just click that and you'll be set.

here is what i came up with its pretty cheap.

cpu http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360795756620

motherboard and ram  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=141122025656

psu http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corsair-Enthusiast-TX-850-Watt-Modular-80-PLUS-Bronze-TX850M-Power-Supply-/181249450657?pt=PCA_UPS&hash=item2a334f22a1

the rest is asuming you have a keyboard and mouse and a cheap hard drive any will pretty much do.

that comes to $335

that the cheapest i have seen in a while and thats what i am running so its a pretty good deal for 115k ppd

What do you know, you can find processors for $25 each. Well there you go.

You might have to upgrade the BIOS on the motherboard to support hexa-cores though, it's not too difficult but it's a little sketchy like any BIOS flash...

you do it will not boot with the hexa cores without the upgrade but its not hard just sketchy. i just followed the guide and it worked like a charm.

Wow, that is actually great, I might take a look at it, I will have to find processors that can be shipped to Canada though. Shipping is going to SUCK

It looks like the PSU and Motherboard ship to Canada, but the processors don't so you'll need to find someone else who does. You'll end up paying the most for the motherboard, those things are huge and weigh a lot...
