So, before you ask, I have tried VLC, several times actually, with it crashing every time regardless, reinstall, crash, update, crash, rollback, crash. I've tried different MKV videos, all of them crashing VLC. So now that's out of the question. Are there any better alternatives out there as I want to get my MKV files into Adobe applications and media encoder doesn't support them either. I'm absolutely stumped.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I would say something is wrong with your system when VLC crashes that hard playing MKV.

Does VLC only crash when you try converting the files, or does it crash even when you try playing the files?

If it crashes when the file is being played, then chances are the file is corrupt.

If it crashes when you try to convert, then the issue might be that the MKV file contains streams MP4 does not support.

Also, have you tried doing this in VLC? You want to do this because it keeps the original audio and video intact during the conversion. That means it will be really fast to convert, and you will not lose any quality (unlike a complete transcode which will be very slow, and will either make the file much bigger or looking worse).

Quote
  1. Run "VLC media player".
  2. From main menu select "Media" > "Convert / Save...".
  3. On "File" tab, click "Add..." button.
  4. Choose you MKV file. After that, it should be added to the list. (Alternatively, you can drag&drop a file into the list.)
  5. Click "Convert/Save" button.
  6. Select Profile: "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)".
  7. Click on the icon button that has hint: "Edit selected profile".
  8. On "Encapsulation" tab, leave "MP4/MOV" selected.
  9. On "Video codec" tab, check both "Video" and "Keep original video track".
  10. On "Audio codec" tab, similarly select both "Audio" and "Keep original audio track".
  11. Click "Save" button.
  12. In "Destination" selection, click "Browse" button to select directory and file name for you destination MP4 file.
  13. Click "Start" button.
  14. Observe progress bar in the main window as file is converted.

Mine play just fine.

Never got any problem with MKV using VLC actually although i mainly use K Lite Codec pack bundled with MPC.

Try to convert it then using format factory its a freeware

Turns out the files were all corrupt and I ended up just downloading a mp4 h.264 format of that video anyways. So problem solved. Thanks for all the help!
