What's up guys,

This is my first post here. Been an LTT viewer for many years though.

First post will be sort of a weird one;

So I currently transitioned to MacOS. I'm using an LG external 4K monitor with the Mac in clamshell mode.

I use Fliqlo (the retro clock screen saver) regularly and leave my display on for 3 hours at a time when I am not at it or if I'm asleep.

When I am asleep, I like to use Flux in addition to turning the monitor brightness all the way down to keep it as dark as possible but still keep Fliqlo up to see from bed.

My question (sorry it took so long to get to it,) is do you have any suggestions on how I could make the monitor even darker? It still illuminates my room just a little bit and it's like I just need to make the black even blacker or something.

I wish that I could just turn off the backlight entirely but that unfortunately is not an option with this monitor. Flux and turning brightness down help a lot but are still not what I hope to achieve - I almost feel like I need the deep blacks of HDR.

Thank you very kindly for your responses and input. & with this being my first post here I would like to say thank you so much to the LTT team for all of the obvious that goes without saying.

unfortunately, some displays have very gray blacks.

it's simply a fault with LCD displays. they can't go to true black while displaying stuff.

a new monitor would fix this, but a clock would be cheaper, more useful, and overall better.

@kittiecommitteeWhy not just get a clock? Assuming that's why you are using this.

Well, I mean. This is LTT. Practicality went out the window at the sign up page.

Thank you for your responses [:

It's hard getting it darker if you've done all of that. Black is a lightsource on normal LED screens. Like alot of newer phones you do get AMOLED which makes all black pixels off, meaning the only "light source" is the other colors. If that made sense

Yeah I get what you're saying. I was thinking about how cool it would be if there was some tech similar to Samsung's Always On Display options for their smart phones. I use AOD on my S8+ and I love it. I think that the combination of Flux and turning the brightness is acceptable and I will continue to do it this way, but  it definitely looked more natural and better overall on a TN panel vs this IPS one - which I believe the panel type plays a large role in this.

Obviously this use case is not something that many people should use to determine the type of monitor that they choose, but it still is interesting to me and something to consider myself personally on my next purchase.
