Hey all,

So, I've been trying to upgrade my sister's computer. It's a Dell Inspiron 518 with a Core 2 Duo E7500 and 2Gb of DDR2
I recently learned of the little 771 Xeon trick that makes them compatable with Socket T, and so I bought some more memory and an x5460 to throw in.
The problem is, the motherboard HATES this memory. Everytime I try to put a stick in, it beeps at me and doesn't post.

The memory I'm trying to use is this: http://txmicro.com/Kingston-KC6844-ELG37-1GB-DDR2-PC2-4200-p-5034.html

Somebody please help :(

that RAM is ECC and far as I know 775 boards don't support ECC RAM so that will be the issue, sorry mate but you need new RAM. Which isn't ECC

Wait

Are you kidding me

Why didn't I realize it was ECC

I just saw "Desktop RAM" and I assumed it was non-ECC
Soooooooo, another question...

I haven't installed the Xeon yet, but I do know that Xeons do support ECC
do you think it will work with the Xeon?

firstly please quote me in order for me to reply, means I get told that I probably should reply

and yea it is. on that product page it says it's got error correction (ECC)

Xeons support ECC yes, but the motherboards chipset also needs to support it far as I remember, so I doubt it, try it with the old RAM first then use the ECC stuff, as I said I doubt it will work but you never know

it's quite alright, and yea it does. Don't worry we've all had things like that. I have 2 servers which only use 3 specific makes of RAM, of which I own none, so that's even more fun
