HDMI to component converter half working

So I am trying to display content from my laptop and/or Apple TV on a Phillips 30PW850H 30" HDTV. The only output of my Apple TV is HDMI and the TV only has component cables. I ordered a cheap HDMI to component converter box that does. It seems to be working. I can get audio, but the video that comes through is smushed in one corner and then copied and cropped in the other corner, hard to explain but I'll try and attach a picture. Any help is appreciated.

Does the converter box downscale/convert resolutions?

 

Most Component HD screens support up to 1080i max, so if the Apple TV is outputting at 1080p, the TV probably has no idea what to do with that information.

 

Can you specify the output resolution on the Apple TV? If so, try setting it to 1080i.
