Got A Cool Idea!

So i just need to ask some advise really, i have a couple of weeks holiday and i have decided to do a project, a old pc case with 20-30 hdds in it hooked up to a modular power case and sata cables coming from the back of the hdd using a sata to usb adapter. the usb from the adapter goes into a usb splitter so i could get lots of usbs from the hdd's in there so i only have one usb wire coming out. power supply is a modular power supply with power splitters so for everyone cable i can hook up 2 hdds to one cable. here are the links to the items i was thinking of using, and a quick question what power spiltter will i need for power satas, in other words what is the type of power addapter i need

and my plan is to hook the psu to a switch on the frount of the case, but i read you need the mobo connector for the rest to work is there anyway arround that? and any advise is good advise?

Sorry to say but I just wonder: What is the point about this project? 20 HDDs storing data from USB :|

 

Other then that I think you got a well planned build/project here and I hope you accomplish your goal here :) But a 60 Terabyte "thumbdrive" is quite insane :o

Unless you already have the psu, it's much more than you need. SATA drives need about 10W each. On the other hand if you do have it you only need to get two more SATA cables. The unit comes with 4x4 SATA cables and can take two more easily, which would give the ability to power 24 drives. Or use a molex to SATA power splitter like this one.

 

To have the case switch control the psu directly, I believe it's just a matter of controlling two pins on the motherboard power connector. An internet search will turn up which two.

 

Sounds like an interesting project. If you do try it, log it so we can follow along.

Something like the following should let you RAID the drives. This is just one of a large number of these types of cards and cables.

I still don't see how its going to work, 4 per SAS cable = 16. Would need a JBOD enclosure with a backplane.
