80C During Overwatch 290

Is 80 degrees normal? Especially during Overwatch? I would have imagined it would run a bit cooler. Frames are capped at 70 as well. I'm running the Sapphire Vapor-X if that matters to anyone.

I get around those temps as well with my gtx 1080 at 1080 res as well, and have to setup an aggressive fan curve to combat it. I have a case with lots and lots of airflow, and e even so, Its pretty much the only reason why I've never OC'd my gpu, and am looking into getting a a hybrid watercooled GPU.

I'm looking at custom water cooling but in the meantime it would be very nice if I had some lower temps when loads are lighter.

The Vapor-X R9-290 and R9-290X should run quite a bit cooler.

 

When was the last time you took the card out, cleaned out some of the dust build-up on the fans, and in between the metal heatsink fins?

 

Have you checked to make sure all three fans are working when gaming?

 

Are you using the automatic fan profile, or a custom fan curve?

I've had the card out of my system a couple months ago. I didn't specifically clean the card but it's definitely not covered in dust. All three fans spin although I'm using the default curve.

Depending on a lot of factors, yes, it's normal. My 390 ran pretty hot in this game too, residually during the heat wave of last year and on my older case. If anything, you could try reapplying thermal paste.

290 is a VERY hot card. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT  SPEND MONEY TO CUSTOM WATER COOL A 290! That card is old and for the price of the water cooling you could buy a new card that would preform far better and cooler

I have a fractal design r4. I'm running a 5820k with a top mounted h100i which runs plenty cool.

I agree entirely! I don't plan on water cooling the 290. I'm waiting for Vega and then going to buy a 1080 or better to go with my liquid cooling loop.

I'm suffering the same issue with the same card, but i think especially closed sidepanel cases like mine Sharkoon Bulldozer BD28 are actually inttensifying the thermal problem. The air gets pushed into the baggy sidepanel and the psu is pulling it downwards into the gpu again.

My Card still looks clean  and i also though of cleaning it up as well as replacing thermal coumpount, but trough your post i think thats a general problem, which might be related, but i will do some test with heat exausts on the sidepanel and gonna tell you if that worked. 

stress test on Furmark without says 80°C with min 18FPS max 226Fps average 30 fps

update: the exaust make a diffrence from 5°C which is a lot.

I just removed the side panel and I dropped 7°C in game. I'll go ahead and say your theory is accurate.

Weird isn't it?. I mean i got actually really solid airflow . I was using some cardboard to simulate a closed case just with some holes to the sidepanel.
