even if you penny pinch to the max. pick up a last gen Alienware 15. Get a SICK deal on one for 1000. Get a AGA for 200. That still only leaves you with 300. Second hand 980ti STEAL costs 300. So assume you get all these amazingly sick deals. You have a 6700HQ locked at 3.1ghz with a 980ti (so around 1070 performance). Shit performance on the CPU + 5% using the AGA give or take and you have a 1070 -15% and only when you're docked to the AGA. And normally you would be stuck with a really heavy laptop with last gen performance that's second hand. 

 

lemme say again. no. eGPU is a value proposition. It's for if you have tons of money and you want a solution to a problem that money can fix. 

 

eg. some of the best eGPU laptops are actually the Macbook Pro 15 2016. But you would need to get the max tier 1 with 6920HQ + 460 for decent performance on the go + 300 for the Akitio Node + 700 for the 1080ti. 

So you have 3000+300+700 so about 4000 dollars for a solution that needs alot of tinkering to get working properly. Take note that TB3 has a FAR higher performance downgrade so when you put in a 1080ti expect around 1080. 

 

Lets assume you don't want a Mac, a decent quad core + tb3 costs around 1.2k right now. 

Dell 5480. Say you pick it up from Dell Outlet for 1.2k + 300 akitio node + 700 1080ti. Problem is on Windows laptops the TB3 port isn't routed directly to the CPU and goes to a motherboard PCH so even worse performance. Still 2.2k for a decent solution. With around 1080-10% performance with a 1080ti.

PenTile (RG/BW) not-true-4K display, regarded deceptive marketing on part of ASUS. Also the less-good gap-touch-layer type of touchscreen, and the chance for a Samsung-brand not-true-4K LCD with poor contrast and color balance.

 

If you like the idea of this laptop on paper, I'd look at the Dell XPS 15 and Lenovo Yoga 720.

That looks like a good deal and a nice laptop. If I was in the market for a laptop I'd consider it!
